“No one wanted to be my friend,” Dr. Vandana recalls about her childhood. When her parents announced to relatives or neighbors their plans to make her a doctor, Vandana would look for a place to hide. It’s hard to find a trace of that girl now as Vandana bustles down the outdoor corridors of her hospital in one of India's poorest states, her arms full of papers. It looks like she’s not quite making contact with the ground.
